What’s Next For Liz Cambage And The LA Sparks?
Liz Cambage was the big offseason highlight for the LA Sparks and was expected to be a major contributor to a team hoping to compete in the playoffs. Instead, Cambage and the Sparks reached a contract divorce following a 12-15 start to the 2022 season. This makes Cambage a free agent who is able to sign with any team, whether that be in the W or overseas.
Cambage has been a star ever since entering the WNBA — she’s averaged 15.8 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 54 percent from the field for her career. Her accomplishments don't stop there; Cambage is a four-time all-star, two-time All-WNBA member, has one scoring title, and owns the WNBA single-game record for scoring with 53 points.
This is certainly not the first time Cambage has made the move to leave a team, as she is notorious for switching teams often, never having played on the same WNBA team for longer than one season in a row. That means Cambage played one year with the Tulsa Shock, Dallas Wings, and LA Sparks respectively.
Cambage also played for the Las Vegas Aces for the 2019 and 2021 seasons, playing for the Southside Flyers of the Australian WNBL instead. In addition, Cambage has played for nine different teams overseas, which brings her total to 14 different teams during her 16-year professional career — nearly a new team every season.

“It was L.A. or out for me…," Cambage said when she signed with the Sparks. "There was nowhere else I wanted to be”.
It remains uncertain if Cambage will sign with another WNBA team this season and if she does, it would likely be to a big market team, like the New York Liberty or Atlanta Dream. This late in the season, however, it’s practically impossible for Cambage to give a non-playoff-bound team a boost to make the playoffs. The only contender that would really benefit from Cambage would be the Washington Mystics given their guard-heavy lineup.
Another option for Cambage includes making her way back overseas, particularly to the Australian WNBL. The Australian native is a former WNBL MVP and two-time WNBL champion, including a recent title in 2020 with the Southside Flyers.
As for the LA, Cambage's move will create a roster spot for the team to sign a free agent. The Sparks are still on the hunt for a playoff spot, but with no premier free agents on the market, it’s likely that they will stick with their current roster heading into the final stretch of the season.
