The Incredibly Enigmatic Megan Rapinoe
The co-captain of the Women’s U.S. National soccer team Megan Rapinoe stands out, and it’s more than just her colorful hair. She is talented, brave, and outspoken regarding issues she’s deeply passionate about.
Rapinoe uses her platform to fight for equality in sports through race, gender, and sexuality. As an openly gay woman, she fights tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights, equal pay in sports, and political rights.
A widespread conversation sparked in 2019 when she stated in a video that she would never visit the White House. Donald Trump responded and scolded her on Twitter for “disrespecting our country.”

After the criticism and backlash from her comments, Rapinoe stated that she still stood firmly by her remarks and urged her teammates to join her in fighting back:
“I would encourage my teammates to think hard about lending that platform or having that co-opted by an administration that doesn’t feel the same way and fight for the same things we fight for.”
Rapinoe is also the author of her book “One Life” which will be published in November 2020. In an Instagram post promoting her book she writes, “I hope stories like mine can help people find their own path to fighting for a more equitable world.”
HBO announced that Rapinoe will be hosting a new talk show, “Seeing America With Megan Rapinoe: A Conversation Hosted by the U.S. Soccer Icon,” premiering August 1st, 2020 where she will discuss today’s cultural conversations. According to HBO, “Rapinoe has become one of the United States’ most recognizable and admired advocates for change.”
