Sacred Heart University Featured Its First All-Female Broadcast
It was just another home game for the Sacred Heart University women’s basketball team on Jan. 21, 2022. The Pioneers showed up ready to defend their court against rival Mount St. Mary’s, who trailed SHU in the series 34-8.
Because of the high-profile status of the game, it was going to be aired on NEC Front Row, the official video network for the Northeast Conference, with broadcasters Tykera Carter and Dominique Patrick on the call. The thought of having two women call the game was exciting enough, but it sparked an idea for those who worked behind the scenes.
“Our all-female broadcast came about due to us finding out it was going to be two women on play-by-play and color, and then we said it would be great if everyone in the control room were women as well,” said SCM graduate assistant Lauryn McNair. “And then, we decided to just go for a full all-women's broadcast including camera operators.”
While the Pioneers lost a hard-fought battle 60-51, it was still a historic night for women in sports. Check out New12’s story on the broadcast here.
